Somatics

Information is only good if it can be used. The fact that all therapeutic modalities are not trained in Somatics and Neuromuscular Re-education means that you might get an assessment that you know little what to do about it.

Perhaps you have heard, you have one leg shorter than the other. Or, your pelvis is anteriorly rotated to the right and your left shoulder is posteriorly rotated and your left shoulder blade wings out.

Sounds like a foreign language, right?

What brings you joy? What is your purpose for being here? What would you like to contribute to the world?

Envision it and let the universe take over...

Stress creates disease - the art of listening heals

Our physiology has equipped us with the ability to fight, flight or freeze in the face of imminent danger. This natural autonomic response served us well in pre-historic times. After the danger was over, we settled back into a rest and digest, nervous system response. But today it’s a different story.

Today our lifestyles, work habits, poor postural habits and weakened resiliency mean that the threats to our nervous system health are exponential – leaving us chronically overstimulated.

Want to learn more about Somatics & SomaYoga. I recommend these books and schools.

Somatics, Re-Awakening the Mind's Control of Movement, Flexibility and Health, Thomas Hanna, 1988

The Body of Life, Creating New Pathways for Sensory Awareness and Fluid Movement Thomas Hanna, 1979

Move Without Pain, Martha Peterson, 2012

Why We're in Pain, Sara St. Pierre, 2015

It is important that you have a solid understanding of the difference pandiculation and stretching to inform the why and how of the work that you are doing with your SomaYoga therapist. A pandiculation - is the fundamental technique of Clinical Somatics, and the most effective way to re-educate muscles or chains of muscles that are tight, sore and in chronic pain. When you learn how to effectively "re-educate" muscles releasing them from involuntary chronic contraction, tension dissolves and strength and ease naturally appear. Here is why.

Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA) is a memory loss of how to feel and control certain muscles or muscles groups in the body. It is a learned motor pattern of the nervous system whereby these muscles display a limited range of motion, maintain a higher than normal level of involuntary contraction at rest, experience ongoing pain, and other dysfunctions at rest or in use.

SMA is undiagnosible and untreatable through the traditional medical model because the treatment requires work involving the sensory motor feedback loop.
