2011-01-03 Sciatica and Pelvic Instability

The condition of Sciatica is generally caused by the compression of lumbar nerves L4 or L5 or sacral nerves S1, S2 or S3, or by compression of the sciatic nerve itself (Wikipedia, 2010). In my experience in working with clients I have found that instabilty in the pelvis and/or weakness in the core/pelvic floor are key contributing factors to this condition.

Working with clients to increase pure range of motion of the leg bone in the hip socket; improve activation or restoring pelvic floor engagement in relationship to the diaphragm with easy, full breath; strengthening glute muscles and the relationship between abductors and adductors; and improving the bodies ability to transfer load throught the pelvis, all work alleviate or completely correct sciatica symptoms.
